Willing to Receive

Hello Reader,

Songs have a way of captivating me. Perhaps it is the beauty of crafting words strung together to melodies and arranging instruments and notes together to turn individual elements into an ensemble of beauty. My husband loves music as well, and while neither of us kept up with instruments and playing music from our childhood days, we love orchestras, concerts, etc.

Months ago I arranged for us to go to a concert at the Grand Ole Oprah for his birthday. We didn’t do much for his 40th last year, and I wanted to make this year special. So we snuck away from life this week for a very quick trip to Nashville. Combining Christmas lights and Christmas music made everything all the more magical.

This year I’ve been working on moving slow through this season of Christmas. Savoring beauty before me and not missing moments. As each Christmas song was sung throughout this concert I keyed into words I often skip past.

Maybe you’ve done this as well, we become so accustomed to the Christmas songs we fail to process their meaning. We listen to the melodies and miss the meaning of the song.

I’ve been thinking about one word from one line over and over.

Joy to the world the Lord is come. Let earth receive her king.

Receive. The word has stuck to my soul this week. Jesus has come, He’s done all the work and holds all the power. All He asks is we receive Him as He is.

But am I really willing to receive? Am I willing to receive anything He offers? Am I willing to receive His plans for me when I want to make my own? Am I willing to receive a Savior that doesn’t look like I think He should and calls me to surrender my ideas?

This Advent season I’m working on growing my faith by receiving what He places before me and surrendering what I think things should look like. I’m opening my hand before Him and rejoicing for the gifts He is offering for me to receive from Him.

What is God offering you this week? What does He have for you to receive from Him? Or maybe there is something you have failed to receive from Him that you need to receive now? We don’t have to receive from Him, He will allow us to reject Him and His gifts, but why would we do that?

Father, joy comes when we receive You and Your goodness to us. I surrender my ideas, and empty my hands of the things I hold so there is space to receive from You the good gifts you offer me through Jesus. I pray these things in the name of Jesus and by the power of the Spirit, amen.

In His Grace,

Hello Reader, Have you ever read a familiar story for the umpteenth time and all of a sudden you notice something new? It's not really new to the story, but it's new to you. This happens to me several times when reading through Scripture. A story I think I know forwards and backwards is before me, yet when I go to read it something fresh jumps off the page. The story of Daniel isn't a new story to me. It's one of my favorite books in the Bible, and a character whose life I am fascinated by...

Hello Reader, Several months ago it was time for our family to car shop for a new vehicle and I got a new (to me) car. It took a while to learn all the buttons and sensors. Technology changes so quickly that there were many features in this newer vehicle I was unfamiliar with. One nifty little feature is the car icon on my screen which shows me when my car is too close to another or if the car begins to veer either to the right or left of the lane too much. The purpose of this feature is to...

Hello Reader, Several weeks ago my oldest son came home from the store with a bag of dirt, some packets of seeds and a container of planting pots. He decided he wanted to grow a few things so he got everything assembled, filled his containers with planting soil and planted his seeds. Day in and day out he has misted his little plants, checked on the soil, invested in a heat lamp to add more light and even used Saran Wrap to cover some plants and create a barrier so the moisture wouldn't...
